Size of the gradient

A gradient will adjust to the dimensions of the layer.

So a 90º gradient on a thin vertical layer will grade between the colors over just the width the layer. But with an angle of 0 or 180º, the same gradient will have a lot more in-between colors.

In Design. A gradient will resize to encompass the layer’s surface

(In CSS they talk about the ‘gradient box’ that gets resized to always encompass the layer completely. More info here.)
